I wrote this poem for many reasons. In the black community, oftentimes we look at our struggle and fight for equality as a bad thing. This can very easily turn into internalized oppression. If we think something is too hard or we can’t see the finish line, we may not try at all. I wrote this to help empower the Black community and help them understand that while we may have to work harder for something, it will just make our victory that much sweeter. We will become more knowledgeable because we know that we must be. We are working hard because the generation before us worked harder. We are working hard so that the generation after us doesn't have to. I wrote this to help motivate my fellow black and brown people.
