Description: Interview conducted by Felipe Serrano.  Ruth Howell was involved with the Coalition for Lesbian and Gay Rights, and worked towards passing the Connecticut Civil Rights Bill of 1991.  Howell’s social consciousness and political awareness was a trait that was passed down from her parents since childhood.  Although she did not become actively involved in activism until after college, she was always aware of the issues that were going on around her.  Howell fell into a very politically oriented gay community after she came out in the early 70’s.  During the interview she describes the discrimination that she and others around her experienced.  She also discusses how working in the fields of Drug and Alcohol rehabilitation and mental illness affected her involvement in the political process.  The interview is very informative about the history of GLBT politics in Connecticut since the 70’s.
