True Colors evolved out of extensive field work that McHaelen completed for her masters degree in social work. McHaelen describes how her activism began, and what led her to help youth and families in this capacity. In the interview she also describes her own coming out experience, the lack of role models for young lesbian women, and the loneliness that sometimes accompanies that lack of role models.
