Title: Oral history interview with Helen E. Brill recorded on 2002 Oct. 29.
Creator: Brill, Helen E.
Description: Interview conducted by Noreen Dallaire. Helen Brill was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1914. She went to college in Southern California where she was introduced to the Quaker religion, which she describes as the strongest influence on her life and activism. She met her husband while teaching in a Japanese internment camp just prior to World War II. They married and moved to New York, where they had two daughters. In 1963 she moved to Connecticut with her husband, who had just begun working for the United Way. She and her husband began the Hartford chapter of PFlag, after meeting parents of gay children and seeing a need for a support group. Although, their daughter was also gay, she had not yet come out to them. Their goal was primarily to set up a safe place to talk about their situations and offer support to others.
